Q. How does it work?
A. There is a small program that runs on your computer. It
communicates with special acceleration servers that we have positioned
across the country. It runs in the background on your computer. When
you request a web page, It sends page requests to our special proxy
servers, that perform sophisticated compression and implement additional
technologies, resulting in significant browsing speed increase. The
program on your computer un-compresses the data and displays it in your
browser.Q. What about
fighting pop-ups and spyware?
A. Yes, there are optional settings in our software to fight those
as well as speed up your connection.
Q. How fast will I go with the Highspeed Accelerator turned on?
A. Individual user results will vary but improvements of 400% to 500%
have been achieved. Local phone lines limit the actual line speeds in
some area so understandably someone who has an un-accelerated 50K connection
will see faster results than someone who can only connects at 33k. So
while the faster line may yield an effective rate of 200-250k with
acceleration the slower line should still see an improvement to perhaps
90-105k.
Q. Will the Accelerator work with
FamilySmart Filtering?
A. No. At present, both the Accelerator and the FamilySmart Filter require
proxy settings and only one proxy server will work at a time. We are working
on a work-around that should be available in early 2004.
Q. Will the Accelerator work with
Windows 95 or earlier operating systems?
A. No, Windows 98 is the oldest operating system supported.
Q. What versions of Internet browsers
will work with the Accelerator?
A. Internet Explorer 4.01 or Netscape 4.07 or later must be used. Both are
available at the manufacturers web site at no charge. Clients should be
encouraged to upgrade if not up to date.
Q. How about MAC computers?
A. Sorry, no MAC support at this time.
Q. How about Linux and Unix etc?
A. Sorry, just Windows O/S at this time.
Q. What happens if the client turns off
the Proxy Server setting in the browser?
A. Acceleration stops but browsing continues. Customers who wish to turn off
acceleration should be encouraged to use the DISABLE option from the task
bar Icon rather than change the proxy settings.
Q. The graphics on some web pages are
grainy under high accelertion. Can they be improved?
A. Yes, you may have set the Accelerator speed too high. Lower your
acceleration speed. See the page entitled
Adjusting the Accelerator Settings .
Q. What is the purpose of supplying the
state code when requesting an authorization code?
A. There are several Pelican Coast acceleration servers located around the
country and the state code is used as a pointer to the most appropriate
server.
Q. What happens if one of the
acceleration servers fails?
A. There is built-in server redundancy/fail-over in the event of failure.
Q. What does it cost?
A. The normal fee will be $5.00 additional per month on a dial-up account.
BUT . . existing customers and new customers may elect to get the service at
a discounted price of $3.00 per month added to their existing account for a
limited time.
Q. Does the Accelerator effect all
dialers or just PelicanCoast?
A. The Accelerator Wizards sets all proxy server settings for all dial-up
connections and the LAN Settings as well. If you don't want acceleration on
these connections, they must be turned off manually.
Q. Can I turn off the Highspeed
Accelerator?
A. Of course, right-click on the task bar icon and select the Disable option
from the menu. |
